Alice Martin's Personal Statement

Martin BOD photo

I live outside of Atlanta, GA and I work as a special educator for elementary students. I have been involved with the Society since 2000 after the diagnosis of Joe and Maggie Langford, children of my lifelong friend, Sissi Langford. After I was asked to run for the Board, I realized that helping families cope with this diagnosis was very important to me. I have been profoundly affected by the struggles of our families, and want to help bring about a better quality of life for the families of children and adults with MPS.

As a board member I serve on the Fundraising Committee as well as the Education and Publicity Committee. I am responsible for writing the Volunteer Spotlight articles for each issue of Courage, and I have done numerous other tasks as needed by the Board. I have attended and helped to organize several fundraising events as well as regional family gatherings.

I have two children, Sara and Austin. Sara is married to Ryan, and teaches third grade in South Carolina. Ryan is an engineer in sales. Austin is currently serving in the Army in Fort Benning, GA. My personal interests are my children, my work, gardening, reading, photography, camping and spending time with friends. I have volunteered in several other capacities in the past including my homeowner association board, children’s organizations, schools, mentoring, etc. I am a graduate of the University of Georgia with a degree in microbiology as well as special education certification.

I want to see continued support for our families as they go through this life experience, increased influence and impact in the national disability and health care arenas, as well as our continued focus on ultimately finding a cure for MPS and related diseases.
